Chants - aka Jordan Cohen - is a Wisconsin-based producer and drummer with releases on The Trilogy Tapes, Maloca Records, Astral Plane Recordings, Impossible City Records, Hush Hush Records, Dutty Artz, and more. His work explores the intersection of organic textures and electronic techniques, and is informed rhythmically & sonically by the dancefloor even when not aiming at it explicitly.
After a series of EPs on the influential experimental club label Astral Plane Recordings, he released the Seven Spheres LP in 2019, containing the underground club hit Assiah Dance. 2021 saw the release of Poly Pointillism, an album of minimalist kalimba compositions created as a series of daily exercises during the early days of lockdown. In 2022 the club single Dance the Crevice was released on Parisian label Impossible City Records (curated by Teki Latex), which received widespread play at clubs and festivals.
In 2023 he and London musician Dane Law released the collaborative LP Gurum Triads on Will Bankhead's esteemed label The Trilogy Tapes. A transatlantic guitar & drums duet album, the process involved Dane Law improvising using a MAX/MSP instrument (built on samples of his acoustic guitar and cassette tapes of drums & percussion sent by Cohen) of his own invention. Cohen then shaped the recordings, adding live drums, self-sampled beats, and other instrumentation (including the recorded debut of the electrosteel, a new instrument created and played by musician & inventor Jeff Snyder).
Chants kicked off 2024 with the club-focused Chaotic Dance EP for DJ Chrissy's Maximum Airtime label, premiered on BBC6 by Tom Ravenscroft.
Speleogenesis is Chants' most recent project, an all-drum duo with his teenhood drum teacher Dave Schoepke. Their debut album was released on Maloca Records (Belgium) in October 2024, followed by select live performances. ‘Speleogenesis’ blends live drumming with dub techniques and dancefloor-informed production, guided by imagery of a subterranean world.
In addition to his own work, Chants produced the song Doomsday for Milwaukee rapper WebsterX, which now has streaming counts in the millions. He also started Limited Resources Label in 2022 to release process-oriented work (based on briefs involving specific instrumentation, time signatures, bpm, tools, etc) by other artists.
Over the years Chants has received club & radio support from the likes of Objekt, Laurel Halo, Batu, Teki Latex, aya, Tom Ravenscroft, the Blessed Madonna, Kablam, Trevor Jackson, Air Max ‘97, DJ Haram, and many more.
As a drummer, Jordan Cohen has focused on learning and absorbing the living tradition of New Orleans second line music. As a member of Mama Digdown's Brass Band he has performed across the United States and at festivals internationally. He has also backed up artists like legendary New Orleans trumpet player Leroy Jones.
